Availability / Habitat
The Ova plant is mainly found in India and neighboring countries of West and South Asia.
• In India, Ova is cultivated agriculturally in the states of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Flowers and Fruits of Ova
• Properties: Digestive, bitter, sour, pungent, hot in potency, sharp, and light in nature.
• Ova is a herbaceous plant. Its cultivation is mainly done during the winter season.
The leaves are small, rough, and dark green in color, similar in shape to fenugreek leaves.
• Flowers appear about two months after sowing, followed by fruiting.
The fruits are brick-colored, extremely small, similar in size to sesame seeds, and turn brownish when mature.
After ripening, the fruits are harvested by rubbing and threshing by hand.
Medicinal Uses of Ova Plant
• Due to its pungent and bitter nature and its beneficial effects on the body, Ova is widely used as a medicine.
• In cases of frequent hiccups, gas in the stomach, or chest pain, rubbing Ova seeds in the palm and consuming them provides relief.
• If there is bad breath, consuming equal quantities of Ova and fennel seeds after meals is beneficial.
• If stomach pain occurs due to gas, rubbing Ova seeds and consuming them with water gives immediate relief.
• In case of intestinal worms, consumption of Ova with black salt is beneficial.
• Consumption of Ova seeds helps reduce weakness, debility, and bone weakness in pregnant women.
• For headache, heating Ova powder in coconut oil and applying it to the forehead provides relief.
• Regular consumption of Ova along with rock salt helps reduce the risk of heart diseases.
• For cough, consumption of Ova leaf juice mixed with a little lemon juice and a pinch of rock salt helps cure cough, including dry cough.
• For ear pain, two drops of oil prepared with Ova should be put into the ear to relieve pain.
• Ova is beneficial in gastro-related disorders.
• For cold and cough, boil Ova leaves in one cup of water until it reduces to half a cup, let it cool, add honey, and consume slowly.
• To reduce physical weakness, prepare a decoction of Ova and Tulsi leaves, add lemon juice, and consume it for benefit.
• Excessive consumption of Ova may increase bile (pitta) in the body.
• Ova helps reduce semen quality and quantity.
• According to Acharya Charaka, Ova is a pain-relieving (Shoolnashak) herb.
• In joint pain, applying Ova powder to the affected area and giving hot fomentation provides relief.
