Kushmand / Kohla / Petha (Ash Gourd) – Ayurvedic Importance
Names :

• Hindi Name : Petha, Kaddu (Safed Kaddu), Kushmand.
• English Name : Ash Gourd, Winter Melon, White Pumpkin.
• Sanskrit Name : Kushmanda.
• Scientific Name : Benincasa hispida.
Introduction :
Kushmand, also known as Kohla (Ash Gourd), is a creeper-type plant. It is found all over India and is widely cultivated. In Ayurveda, this plant holds great importance due to its medicinal properties. It is also extensively used as a food item in daily diet.
Plant Structure (Botanical Description) :
• Roots :
The roots of the Kushmand plant are fibrous. They spread deep into the soil and provide support to the plant.
• Stem :
The stem is long and soft. It spreads like a vine and has fine hairs on it. The stem grows with support.
• Leaves :
Leaves are large, broad, and round in shape. They are slightly hairy, green in color, and have clearly visible veins.
• Flowers :
Flowers are yellow in color. Male and female flowers are separate. They attract bees, which help in pollination and fruit formation.
• Fruit :
The fruit is large, round or elongated. It is white in color externally.
When raw, it appears green and turns white when ripe. Inside, it contains white pulp, from which the sweet “Petha” is prepared.
• Seeds :
The fruit contains whitish seeds inside.
Properties :
This fruit has a cooling (cold) nature. It is light to digest, nutritious, refreshing, and helps reduce body heat.
Ayurvedic Importance and Uses of Kushmand / Kohla / Petha :
• Helps reduce Vata and Pitta doshas in the body.
• Enhances memory power (intellect) and sharpens the brain.
• Useful in reducing forgetfulness, mental stress, seizures, and epilepsy.
• Reduces mental stress and promotes good sleep, keeping the body healthy.
• Helps relieve excessive thirst and dryness in the throat.
• Acts as a mild laxative (Anulomak), relieving constipation and gas, improving digestion, and reducing indigestion.
• Being Pitta-pacifying, it reduces body heat.
• Helps eliminate intestinal worms through stool.
• Strengthens the heart.
• Helps strengthen the lungs.
• Useful in Raktapitta (bleeding disorders like nosebleeds); acts as a blood coagulant.
• Beneficial in urinary problems such as difficulty in urination and kidney stones; helps break and expel stones.
• Helps increase Shukra Dhatu (reproductive tissue).
• Maintains body temperature balance and improves appetite.
• Powder of seeds (3 to 5 grams) helps remove intestinal worms.
• Calms the mind and enhances vitality (libido).
• Low in calories, hence helpful in weight management.
How to Use :
• Take fresh juice (10 to 30 ml) every morning for best results.
• Used to prepare the sweet dish “Petha”.
• Consumed as vegetable or soup.
• Widely used in Ayurvedic medicines.
Cultivation :
It grows well in well-drained soil and warm, humid climate. It is mainly cultivated during the rainy season.

Kushmand (Ash Gourd) is highly beneficial for health and is a nutritious food. It has great importance in Ayurveda for diet and wellness. It has no side effects when consumed in proper quantity.
