• Habitat :

Ankol plant is found throughout India, but it is especially found in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Bihar.

• Height of the Tree :

This is a small tree that grows about 3 to 6 meters tall.

• Stem :

The stem of this plant is about 2.5 to 3 inches thick.

• Branches :

The branches of this plant are crooked and irregular.

• Bark :

The bark of the Ankol tree is grey in color and rough in texture.

• Leaves :

The leaves are oval (elongated) and pointed. They resemble oleander leaves and are long and broad. The plant has foliage throughout the year.

The flowers are white in color and bloom from February to April. They have a mildly sweet fragrance.

• Fruits :

The fruits are similar to berries. Initially, they are reddish and later turn black when mature. The inner pulp is whitish and sweet in taste.

• Root :

The root of Ankol is yellowish, strong, and oily.

• Seeds :

Oil is extracted from the seeds of Ankol.

Medicinal Importance of Ankol Tree :

The root contains about 0.8% “Ankotin” substance, and about 0.2% of it is present  in its oil. This oil has disease-fighting properties and is used in medicine.

The taste of the oil is astringent, bitter, and slightly pungent. Its nature is sharp, hot, and unctuous (oily).

Medicinal Uses :

The root is used to reduce blood pressure.

Its juice is used to treat poison, phlegm (kapha), bile (pitta), wind (vata), pain, worms, swelling, toxins, and blood disorders.

It is beneficial in poisoning caused by dog, cat, rat, and snake bites.

Oil from the seeds and roots is useful for skin diseases (applied during bathing).

This oil helps in reducing vata and kapha.

In diarrhea and poisoning, the root bark is ground in rice-washed water and taken with honey for relief.

It is useful in treating intestinal worms.

The root oil is used in skin diseases, body pain due to vata, ascites, swelling, inflammation, fever, and urinary obstruction.
