Distribution :

Anjan is a tree found throughout the Indian subcontinent. It is especially found in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia, etc.

This tree is commonly found in dry deciduous forests. It penetrates shallow sandy as well as rocky soil and spreads its roots deep and far. Because of this, it survives for a long time. In India, it is found in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

• Height :

This tree grows about 15 to 25 meters tall.

• Trunk :

The trunk of this tree is strong and thick, and the upper bark is cracked and rough.


• Flowers :

The flowers are small, delicate, and yellow in color.

• Leaves :

The leaves are compound and bi-lobed, similar to the leaves of the Apta tree. The Anjan tree and Kanchan tree look very similar in appearance. However, the leaves of the Anjan tree are separate, while the leaves of the Kanchan tree are joined and folded together. These leaves are used as fodder for animals.

• Fruits :

This tree produces pods. These pods are flat and taper on both sides, and there is one seed at the base.

The wood of this tree is reddish, hard, and heavy.

The leaves of this tree fall in April, and new shoots appear in August. The tree flowers in August–September, and fruits also develop during this period. These fruits remain on the tree for a long time.

Strong ropes are made from the bark of this tree. The leaves contain about 9% protein, therefore they are used as fodder for animals. Because the wood is durable and hard, it is used for building construction, agricultural tools, wheels, fuel, and charcoal production.

The gum, root sap, and leaf juice of the Anjan tree are used in the treatment of sexual diseases.
