During the British era, Ambabarwa was known as a hill station with a cool climate.

Location

Ambabarwa Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the north-eastern part of Buldhana district in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India.


Establishment

It was declared a wildlife sanctuary on 9 April 1997.

Area

127.72 square kilometers

Climate

The sanctuary has a tropical dry deciduous forest climate.

How to Reach

Nagpur is the nearest international city.

It can be reached by road via Nagpur – Amravati – Akot – Tunki route.

Shegaon is the nearest railway station, located about 60 km away. From there, one can reach the sanctuary via Sangrampur.

Flora

The sanctuary is rich in vegetation such as teak, mahua, wood apple, peepal, banyan, bael, anjan, temru, dhaman, katak, mango, sal, neem, ghost tree, haldu, bamboo, jamun, tamarind, and various tuber plants.

Fauna

Animals found here include wild boar, deer, tiger, barking deer, chital, nilgai, sambar, bear, monkeys, langurs, wild dogs (dhole), snakes, flying squirrel, and macaque.

Birds

Bird species include peacock, pigeon, partridge, barbet, woodpecker, kingfisher, cuckoo, jungle fowl, black eagle, parrot, along with many migratory and water birds.

Major Attractions

Jatashankar Waterfall

Located in the central zone of the sanctuary, this waterfall resembles the matted hair (jata) of Lord Shiva, hence the name. It is a major tourist attraction.

Pimpaldoh Fort

Situated within the forest, this fort is now in ruins. It is believed to have been built by Gond or Korku tribes.

Three Stones Point (Teen Dagad Top)

This is the highest point in the sanctuary, located on the Maharashtra–Madhya Pradesh border. It offers a panoramic view of the forest and has some Buddhist remains.


Sonbardi Dam

A large reservoir within the sanctuary that fulfills the water needs of wildlife and is also useful for irrigation.

Hadiya Mahal

A well-known observation point within the sanctuary.

Asaldari and Ambabari

These are core forest areas important for wildlife and bird habitats.

Dhulghat

A region with sparse forest and grasslands, where herbivores like nilgai, deer, and sambar come to graze.


Best Time to Visit

July to September: Lush greenery during monsoon, but travel may be difficult due to rains.

October to February: Best time to visit, ideal for bird watching including migratory species.

March to May: Good for spotting animals near water sources.

Accommodation

Forest department rest houses are available for visitors. Guest houses are also available near Pimpalad village, from where jungle safaris can be enjoyed.

Precautions for Visitors

Hiring a local guide is recommended.

Avoid carrying plastic bottles or bags; use eco-friendly materials.

Do not make noise or disturb animals.

Stay on designated paths and do not venture deep into the forest.

Do not get down from the vehicle during wildlife viewing.

Use vehicles like jeeps or canters for safaris.

Prefer cameras for photography instead of mobile phones.
